Simon Taylor of the Aberdour Cultural Association went into the Primary School to tell stories of old Aberdour. The children made tapestry panels that will be displayed as part of a new Aberdour banner. The last is Shipwrecks.
After big storms when the waves have washed the sand away from the beach, a big rusty anchor is uncovered. This is just beyond the Black Sands.
Do you know what an anchor is? It’s a big metal hook which boats put down to the bottom of the sea to keep themselves in one place.
Well, about 100 years ago there was a great storm, and three boats were shipwrecked along the Black Sands. they were called the Nonna, the Trio and the Snowflake. The Nonna put down its anchor in the hope of stopping itself from hitting the rocks, but it was too late. It ran aground and was badly damaged by the waves. It’s this anchor that you can still see sometimes when the sand has been washed away.
Paul in explaining to the Corinthians not to be taken in my false apostles, says “Three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea“ (2 Corinthians 11:25).
