Reflections from the Pew 52

It is the season of festivals, therefore we are going to look at festivals in the bible – this week Passover.

This feast remembers when Pharaoh would not free the Israelites. God sent the Angel of Death to kill the first born. Moses told the Israelites had to mark their doors with a lambs blood so that the Angel of Death would “pass over” their households, so only the Egypian children would die. The full story can be found here Exodus 12.

Passover is celebrated in the spring. The whole festival lasts about a week. On the evening before Passover they have a special meal and the remember the story of the Exodus. They also have a plate of food where each item has special significance.
When Jesus entered Jerusalem at the end of his ministry it was Passover. He celebrated Passover in the upper room. This gives Christians the Lords Supper, or Communion.

The story in Exodus is a difficult one, but the story is one of the most important ones for both the Jews and now for Christians. We need to take time to think about the stories and what they teach. At one level it is about refugees fleeing persecution at another it is about sins being forgiven.
