John Bell

On Sunday 19th February, John Bell of the Iona Community will be giving a talk in St Fillan’s Church, Aberdour entitled ‘Humour in Holy Scripture’. This talk forms part of St Fillan’s Church 900th Anniversary Celebrations. St Fillan’s may be the oldest church building still in use in Scotland.

John Bell is a well known hymn-writer, broadcaster and Church of Scotland Minister. He recently retired after working for 40 years with the Iona Community and the Wild Goose Resource Group. The Iona Community is an international, ecumenical Christian movement working for justice and peace, the rebuilding of community and the renewal of worship.
John’s work has stretched across the UK, North America and many other countries where he has led workshops on music, worship, personal faith issues and social justice. He is a frequent contributor to ”Thought for the Day” on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

The talk will look at what makes us laugh, and what makes us fail sometimes to understand other people’s humour. John will draw on some stories in the Bible, the humour of which are normally hidden from view. There will also be two or three songs, one of which is arguably the oldest song in the world about laughter.

The talk is free and is on Sunday 19th February, from 3pm to 5pm. As space is limited, booking is recommended. Tickets are available from The Purple Shop and Willie’s newsagents in Aberdour. Light refreshments will be provided. Donations will be welcome in support of the work of the Iona Community.

As well as giving the talk, John will lead the morning service in St Fillan’s Church that day at 10:30am. No tickets are necessary for Sunday morning worship.
