Who is St Fillan?

On 22nd March, Aberdour’s own Medieval historian, Dr Simon Taylor of Glasgow University gave a talk about the origins and identity of the saint, the stories that grew up around him and his connection with Aberdour.

Before, during and after the talk, the Aberdour Medieval Singers, led by Ingried Boussaroque, performed short pieces of medieval music including two from the famous Inchcolm Antiphoner written on Inchcolm in praise of Aberdour’s other saint, Columba.
Both these events are part of Aberdour Cultural Association’s contribution to the 900th Anniversary celebrations.

Simon’s talk is reproduced here. In the conclusion he states:
We have a saint who, in the minds of contemporaries, above all in the mind of King Robert I, saved the king in Strathfillan, and played an active part at the battle of Bannockburn. Apart from Columba, what more powerful a Scottish saint can any church have as its patron?
