Farewell to Mark Evans

Mark Evans will take his last service at St Fillan’s on Sunday 8th December. He has been taking services at St Fillan’s regularly since December 2021. He is moving jobs so will no longer be able to join us. We will miss his thought provoking messages and wish him will in his future work.

Mark was born in West Pilton, here in Edinburgh. His spiritual journey started in the Old Kirk on Pennywell Road. It was here he first felt a call to Diaconal Ministry. Upon leaving High School Mark studied Ministry at St. Colm’s College, Edinburgh before taking up his first appointment with the former Board of Social Responsibility, working with homeless men in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket.

With the Advent of HIV/AIDs, Mark undertook is nursing studies at the North Lothian College of Nursing. He started his working life within the NHS as a staff nurse within Critical Care before returning to work with the Church in Interim Ministry. Mark has 35 years’ experience of working in a variety of ealth and social care settings. He was formally Head of Spiritual Care & Bereavement Lead for NHS Fife, before being appointed as a Professional Advisor for the Scottish Government and led the development of the Scottish Governments National Framework for Spiritual Care which was publish in August 2023. He is an Honorary Lecturer at St. Andrews University and has contributed to a number of national training programmes and strategies.

Mark is an Ordained Deacon with the Church of Scotland and served as President of the Diaconate Council during the COVID Pandemic.
