As it’s St Fillan’s 900th anniversary I’m looking at Rev. Rutherford’s children’s address, where he talks about the history of the church, this one is for 25th June 1967, here he is talking about the Flowers in the Church. This is a continuation of last weeks, where he found 50 flowers in wood and glass.
Why do we have so many flowers you may ask, woven into the wood and glass? It is because each tells a story (not just because they are beautiful) but as the florist says, ‘say it with flowers’.
Look at the Roses, as I told you before, it blossoms to remind us of the blossoming of God’s love for us.
The Daisy reminds us of Jesus as a little boy and growing in God’s love.
The Passion flower, is a sad flower for it reminds us how he died for us on the cross.
And the Lilies, they remind us in the dying days of autumn if we take a bulb and plant it , it seems to die but when the new year comes thee is a green shoot and the lily busts forth, just as Jesus died and an the third day rose.
Finally there are the Buttercups, I don’t know why, maybe the artist put them there open to the sun just as the group of folk were listening tot he good news of Jesus which St Fillan was preaching. Did he include them to show no matter how low, or small or humble the message of the Gospel is for us.
