In 2023 St. Fillan’s church will celebrate it’s 900th anniversary. Therefore we are preparing by looking what institutions started in the 1120’s.

St Giles Cathedral
St Giles’ Cathedral, or the High Kirk of Edinburgh, is a parish church of the Church of Scotland in the Old Town of Edinburgh. Likely founded in 1124 and dedicated to Saint Giles. The current building was begun in the 14th century and extended and altered over the centuries.
Dunfermline Abbey

Dunfermline Abbey was initially a Benedictine monastery of the Holy Trinity and St Margaret, founded in 1128 by King David I.

Church of the Holy Rude

The Church of the Holy Rude, is the medieval parish church of Stirling, Scotland. It is named after the Holy Rood, a relic of the True Cross on which Jesus was crucified. The church was founded in 1129 during the reign of David I.

High School of Glasgow

The original High School of Glasgow was founded as the choir school of Glasgow Cathedral in around 1124, and is the oldest school in Scotland.

The Royal High School of Edinburgh is a co-educational school administered by the City of Edinburgh Council. The school was founded in 1128 and is one of the oldest schools in Scotland.

Stirling High School

Stirling High School is a state high school run by Stirling Council in Stirling, Scotland. It was originally established for the training of ecclesiastics, it began as the seminary of the Church of the Holy Rude, founded in the reign of David I in 1129.

It is interesting to note that St. Fillan’s church is older than all of these.
