Reflections from the Pew 7

As you know I’ve been watching Slighe Chladach Fiobha (Fife Coastal Path) on BBC Alba.

This week Iagan McNeill reached St Fillans Cave in Pittenweem and spoke to Aberdour’s Simon Taylor – I was expecting some great reveleations.

Iagan McNeill: Who was St Fillan?

Simon Taylor: We don’t know.

You can watch it here on iPlayer (St Fillan’s Cave is at 15mins).

As he is an 8th century saint this is what we would expect – but do we really know anybody?

We may know someone but do we really know them, also do we know what it is like to be them.

God knows us – Psalm 139:1-4

Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

There is also the famous quote about understanding others. “You can’t understand someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.”
