Reflections from the Pew 79

As it’s St Fillan’s 900th anniversary I’m looking at Rev. Rutherford’s children’s address, where he talks about the history of the church, this one is from 29th Jan ’67. Here he is realises he got ahead of himself and turns back along the path to look at the summer house.
Arch over path

At the corner of the castle garden wall you can see a blocked up door and window. The garden was a bowling green and there was a door and wooden bridge over the lane we are walking on. It happens that a list of furnishing of the summer house has been preserved and it includes a carpet, three chairs, two cushions and a bible. Another inventry showed that the great hall of the castle also had a bible.

In those times the bible was very expensive, it had only recently become available in English so people were keen to read for themselves about God, to find out about him and how they should live. Today bibles are cheap and are often unread, we don’t find the need to know more about God or how He wants us to live.

So next time you walk down the church lane think about the bible in the summer house and it will remind you to read yours, and find the answers to the most difficult questions of all.
