Reflections from the Pew 84

As it’s St Fillan’s 900th anniversary I’m looking at Rev. Rutherford’s children’s address, where he talks about the history of the church, this one is from 5th Mar ’67. Here he is talks about mole hills and sin!

If you left church last Sunday looking at Robert Blair’s grave stone you will have seen behind you heaps of earth in the grass, someone has been making a mess and that is Mr Mole – you never see him, only see what he does. I thought about this, he is like Mr Sin – we never see him but he is there out of sight making little marks on our character. Making us tell a lie, being dishonest, giving way to envy or jealousy.
Some people think that the way to get rid of Mr Mole is to take a spade and remove the mole hill so the grass looks good- but Mr Mole will just put another mole hill in its place. The same with Mr Sin, some people say think twice  before you act, count to ten before you speak… but this has no more success than getting rid of mole hills.

To get rid of Mr Mole you need an expert, who knows their secrets, you get the Mole Catcher. The same with Mr Sin, you need the Sin Catcher, Jesus Christ who by his death can take away our sin. So just as we ask the Mole Catcher to take away the sin, we need to ask Jesus Christ to take away our sin.

The Mole Catcher must have worked as we no longer get mole hills.
