Reflections from the Pew 1

Sanctuary Sunday

When I think of sanctuary I think of the door knocker at Durham Cathedral.

The knocker on the Cathedral’s northern door, known as the Sanctuary Knocker, played an important part in the Cathedral’s history. Those who ‘had committed a great offence,’ such as murder in self-defence or breaking out of prison, could rap the knocker, and would be given 37 days of sanctuary within which they could try to reconcile with their enemies or plan their escape.

The Right to Sanctuary was abolished in 1624.

More information is available on Durham Cathedral’s website.

Question – Can the church still provide ‘sanctury’ today?

Football Sunday

The newspapers thought it was football Sunday. The following appeared on the internet last week.

WEMBLEY TICKETS
England v Scotland
Friday 18th June 2021
This may be of interest to one of you. A friend of mine has two tickets in a corporate box for England v Scotland. He paid £300 each, but he didn’t realise when he bought the that it was going to be the same day as his Covid 19 postponed wedding. If you are interested, he says he is looking for someone to take his place.

It’s at Hamilton Registry Office, at 2:30pm. The brides name is Moira, she is 5’4″, about 8 stone, quite pretty, has her own income and is a really good cook.

Question – What are your priorities in life?
