Reflections from the Pew 132

Over the next few weeks we are looking at the top ten Old Testament stories, here is number 7 – The Creation Story. These stories you may remember from Sunday School, on closer look they are difficult stories so are often forgotten about in Church.

This story is found in Genesis 1 and describes how God created the universe and everything within it. It begins with the famous line, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

The story unfolds over six days, with God separating light from darkness, creating the sky, land, and seas, and bringing forth vegetation, stars, and living creatures.

On the sixth day, God creates mankind in His own image, male and female, and gives them dominion over the earth. On the seventh day, God rests.

As we know, the bible is not a science or a history text book, instead it is telling us about God and our relationship with God. Some people take it literally and think is shows that the world was created in seven days in 4004BC.

This story tells us God is all-powerful and created all that exists and so we should care for it. It also tells us the importance of having a days rest. I find it amazing that something written around 1400BC to 400BC got the timeline basically correct.
