Moderators and St Fillan’s

Moderators of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and their connection with St Fillan’s Church.

Rev Robert Blair was the Moderator in 1646. He was one of the most important people of his day and after a disagreement with the Archbishop Sharp of St Andrews came to live in Coulson near Aberdour, his gravestone is on the wall of St Fillan’s Church. See Reflections from the Pew 83.

Rev Robert Liston was the Moderator in 1789. He was minister at St Fillan’s from 1764 to 1796 following on from his farther Rev John Liston, who was minister from 1725. This is the period when the roof was removed from St Fillan’s and the church moved to what is now the church hall. The Liston window in St Fillan’s Church is dedicated to them both. Rev John McCallum was the Moderator in 1926. He preached at St Fillan’s Church as part of the Rededication of St Fillan’s Church on 7th July 1926. See Wikipedia.

Rev Leonard Small was the Moderator in 1966. He preached at St Fillan’s Church as part of the 850th anniversary celebrations on 19th June 1973. See Wikipedia.

Rev Hugh Douglas was the Moderator in 1970. He preached at St Fillan’s Church as part of the 850th anniversary celebrations on 20th June 1973. See Wikipedia.

Rev George Reid was the Moderator in 1973. He preached at St Fillan’s Church as part of the 850th anniversary celebrations on 17th June 1973. See Wikipedia.

Rev John Cairns was the Moderator in 1999 (to 2000). He preached at St Fillan’s Church on 7th January 2000 as part of the Millennium celebrations and dedicated the Millennium windows. See Reflections from the Pew 43 and Wikipedia.

Rev David Lacy was the Moderator in 2005. On 28th August, 2005, as part of ‘Church Without Walls’ he celebrated Holy Communion on Inchcolm. It was attended by representatives from all the parishes bordering the Forth, they went by ferry from South Queensferry. The minister of St Fillan’s travelled by sailing boat from Aberdour.
